Growing up in Australia, the original Mad Max movies have always been a part of Australian 1970's and 80's cinema culture. Of course, I'm talking about Mad Max and Mad Max 2, which was renamed in the U.S. to The Road Warrior because I don't believe the original Mad Max was screened there. Clearly a loss for the U.S.!
Then there was Mad Max 3 Beyond Thunderdome, but I never really liked that one because it became a little too influenced by Hollywood with a bigger budget. The original two were unpolished, dirty, made on the cheap, and glorious because of it. We didn't know it at the time, but Mad Max became a key film in what would later be called the Ozploitation genre.
So it was by complete surprise that 30 years later the film maker, George Miller, made Mad Max Fury Road. It was fantastic, and one thing that really stood out for me was the colour grading of the movie. The desert lanscape had a real pop of sunburnt orange and the sky a vibrant teal blue.
Following Fury Road and the later Furiosa which has the same colour grading, I decided to experiment with Mad Max 2 to see if I could achieve a similar grading. Hence, Mad Max 2 Avid Fury Edit was born. The movie and story are unchanged, but I have applied a new colour grading in an effor to achieve a similar look of Fury Road. Some before and after screenshots below.
